At age 8, Charlie, Gypsy (both Border Collies) & Lucy (a mix) landed in a small, rural shelter with an uncertain outcome ahead. Their elderly guardian became so ill, he had to leave his home. He literally walked into the shelter using oxygen to breathe, devastated to hand over his friends.

The dogs' lives had become rough as vet care halted and they were living outside as their guardian's illness progressed. They were not in good shape.

The shelter reached out to Border Collie Rescue. While not Senior ages for Glen Highland to take, fate was on their side. A potential adopter couple had been in touch with Glen Highland, waiting almost 6 months, hoping for a bonded pair, so excitedly they wanted to hear more. Described as extremely sweet with shelter volunteers, no issues with other dogs or cats, and miserable in the shelter, the dogs seemed perfect.

Without meeting either Border Collie, the couple trusted the information and decided to adopt them. Glen Highland is providing special funding support because they jumped into adopting the 2 Border Collies.

However, the BC pair had a pal that had been with them for 8 years, clearly not a Border Collie. As the couple reviewed the concept of a trio, simple local vetting was underway…rabies vaccines, worming and heartworm/tick testing. The sad news came that Charlie was positive for heartworm, and it turned out so was LUCY.

The couple INSTANTLY said ‘Of course we cannot leave Lucy behind’ and a 12-hour roundtrip brought the trio home!

This loving couple made a life-saving decision not just a pair but a TRIO to be safe, healthy and loved for their remaining years. On the transport, they made one stop at Glen Highland for bathing and body checks and then headed home.

While they had 3-1/2 acres to offer the pack, none of the dogs could be trusted off-leash and they had NO fence. They discovered mass chaos walking three distressed, confused dogs on leash! So, their next decision was to build a fence the day after the dogs arrived.

Merely days into this new life of ’canine triplets’, this remarkable couple have kept their sense of humor and are limitless in their beliefs to do what’s best.

All dogs are receiving the medical care they so sorely need as well as lots and lots of loving attention.

They are blossoming before their very eyes…even shy Gypsy is feeling brave! Both canines and humans are sleeping very soundly!

All of us at Glen Highland are so inspired by these wonderful people who decided to do what was BEST for the Charlie, Gypsy & Lucy. With over 3,000 adoptions in GH history, we can count only two times where someone adopted a ready-made pack!!!
