1/26/24, A GREAT ADOPTION DAY FOR REED & JAKE!

REED & JAKE are both lively, fun, good-natured 11 year old Border Collies and now they have a life together! Former Glen Highland adopters came from Pennsylvania to meet these two boys and add them to live with their GH Senior girl, Pepper. She previously lived as a trio and so have these two so ’the three amigos’ are going to do great together…the more, the merrier!

They will have 3 1/2 acres for lots of exploring which Reed & Jake just love and they’ll be with their new guardians 24/7 since both are retired and just cherish their Border Collies - they’ve adopted SIX from Glen Highland over the years!

We are so grateful for their open hearts to take in two Seniors and give them the years ahead of living as adored family members. And, they also took on two heartworm positive dogs, agreeing that the ‘gentler’ slow-kill approach to the disease would be wise.

“Let them enjoy their lives now and not wait a year to be free to play ball or explore,” they said.
HAVE A BLAST REED & JAKE!!!!!

An 11 year old Border Collie, Jake is a fabulous guy, full of energy to run, run, run. In fact, it’s impossible to think of him as a Senior at all.

He is super athletic and strong. He is also incredibly sweet, a classic loving Border Collie. While he loves some ball tosses, people are really ‘his thing’... happy to cuddle on the couch or follow you anywhere.

Jake is great with other dogs, fits in easily with any of them even those who might want to heavily herd him, he could care less. He’s very even tempered and eager to bond. He is great in the car, good at the vet and happy to go wherever you are, bonding fast with ‘his person’.

He is a confident Border Collie but does have a soft nature and blossoms when he knows he’s doing what you want…very happy to please. Positive upbeat tones just bring him to life…he loves to be given the command to ‘go play’ and off he races just for fun. He knows ’speak- say please’ and will do that, too. Jake stares right at you waiting for what to do!

He was living in one home since a pup but domestic violence led to the FurMom going to a shelter herself, leaving her to find homes for her 3 dogs, one being Jake. He came to us from Louisiana, clearly loved but lacking care…he had a bad chronic skin infection from fleas and a mass on his rump that needed to be removed. Fortunately, the mass is totally benign.

And, Jake does have heartworm. We are about to do an echocardiogram to assess his condition and will update his bio. But, we will NOT be putting Jake through the traditional injection shot protcol.

Instead, he will go through the slow-kill method of using Advantage-Multi monthly which kills off heartworms over time. It can take 1 - 2 years to test negative.

“SLOW-KILL” HEARTWORM TREATMENT FOR SENIORS

At Glen Highland we lost two seniors who reacted badly to the injection process. They sadly died, perhaps due to the compromised nature of their health before coming to us or to the severity of the treatment process itself. Then with two additional heartworm positive Seniors, we kept for 6 months to strengthen their health and be sure they could withstand the process. Both had life-threatening reactions to the injections. Fortunately, both dogs lived but we did not complete the injection protocol. They are on Advantage-Multi now.

Our decision to use the slow-kill method stems from the SENIOR AGE ONLY. We ARE in favor of the injection treatment for younger dogs who can handle it.

The injection protocol is a four - six month process, even a year when we have to hold a dog waiting for their health to stabilize so they can endure the tough treatment. Basically a Senior age 10 - 11 - 12 is almost a year older before they can run again and enjoy life. With limited time ahead, we prefer to use the slow-kill method which allows them to be adopted into a life NOW and handle treatment over time.

The Advantage-Multi is a topical solution put between their shoulder blades. It is a preventative for BOTH heartworm and flea and tick needs.
